I became super left leaning in college and my parents always claim it’s cause my professors brainwashed me 😭 I majored in computer science, I took like 4 humanities courses in 4 years and they were all art history and dance. People who’ve never gone to college here don’t know what it’s like. You don’t get “brainwashed” by your professors. You see your hardworking peers get shafted by loans and cause the job market is bad. You have friends who escaped war and famine to get an education at your university just to be deported because of policy changes. THAT is what radicalizes you.

Neither of my parents went to college and I was told the same thing. Went to vanderbilt and studied biology and chemistry. Grew more left leaning and my parents swear up and down that my orgo professor somehow indoctrinated me 😭🤣

the dynamic at a small Christian school is different fs 😂 Had an English teacher telling us about how Darwin was an idiot, and a biblical studies professor that told her classes we should accept ALL the immigrants because it makes our ministry easier

I think one of the biggest benefits of college is being exposed to more diversity and people who don’t think exactly like you. If you grow up in a small town where there’s little diversity and most people share the same political beliefs, you may never have a reason to question those ideas. College didn’t tell me what to believe politically & if anything being surrounded by different cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints encouraged me to question what I had grown up believing and form my own opinions.

College absolutely converted me. I was a staunch Democrat or so I thought. 4 years at a college forced me to confront that and I could never hold those views or vote Democrat again. It felt like I’d been lied to my childhood.

Yesss. My MAGA boomer grandparents believe that colleges are indoctrinating students, but they don’t understand that it has nothing to do with professors shoving political ideologies, opinions, or theories down our throats and all to do with the substance of the material. Research in most cases is supposed to be objective. It is simply facts. Professors aren’t pulling information out of their asses to prove a point, but proving it by using logic, research, and other forms of evidence to CRITICALLY think about what they’re analyzing. And the same is for students. Of course there are discrepancies and modes of finding information, but 9/10 the logic leads back to the same conclusions. The more you study and learn, the more you realize how much of history, information, memory, and stories are all connected. And the only reason why people disagree with that is 1. They choose not to understand, read, and accept the facts or 2. They’re just simply stupid and don’t do their independent reporting or research. That’s why my grandparents think FoxNews is a reliable source in 2026. Because they’re not only NOT accepting or adapting to change, but they don’t even realize that change has occurred unless they outright disagree with it like same sex marriage, abortion, civil rights, or healthcare. They won’t analyze these perspectives outside of their own experience. And that’s the problem.

It’s funny seeing business majors be conservative in my school because if you genuinely pay attention, you end up realizing why capitalism without government control is horrible and you end up thinking yourself rather than relying on implicit biases taught by media (ex of biases: communism/socialism is bad, capitalism is good, US intervention is good, etc)
