I was diagnosed with autism around 13 y/o, because of a lack of diagnosis I was heavily invalidated in my childhood environment which I think heavily impacted me developing bpd which I was diagnosed with at 17, I do think autism especially undiagnosed can make the person be high risk for developing bpd though it's not certain

Personally the fact of being autistic and being diagnosed very late and so my symptoms being punished I think had an impact in me developing bpd later in life but it’s just my personal experience and what I believe but I’m not sure of course

One of the big issues with this discourse is how underdiagnosis (which is now beginning to change) has massively swayed the statistics within academia and often accidentally gives inaccurate representations. A good example would be the way so many people attribute ASD-specific traits (particular sensory issues relating to touch/sound, especially) to ADHD, as until 2012, you couldn't be dual diagnosed with both. This meant that AuDHD people studied were having their autism symptoms attributed to just ADHD if they were diagnosed, and having their autism attributed to ADHD vice versa

I'd heard that there was none at all and that autism occurs in people with bpd about the same as the general population maybe even less so.

I am an autistic person, we aren’t just strictly vulnerable towards bpd, we are vulnerable to disorders in general due to being extremely susceptible to abuse, bullying, isolation, neglect, etc. But that isn’t caused by autism in of itself, it’s because the world has always had a problem with raising and caring for autistic individuals which leads to problems like that which can (but not always) a disorder. The reason why people think only or specifically BPD has a high co-occurrence rate with autism is due to how similar BPD and autism are on paper, the key trait in seeing if an autistic person has bpd is to see the reasons and origins behind their traits that present themselves as BPD symptoms; which is extremely tricky to identify which can lead to both misdiagnosis or a disorder going under radar. (I am not a therapist so I might be wrong, this is just from my own understanding and research)

It’s weird to make this connection anyways because BPD is something that is developed and autism is not. I feel like these people experience the social realities of having BPD and just assume they have autism. Similar to how a lot of people with CPTSD automatically assume they have BPD

I’m curious about ADHD and BPD as someone who has both. I’ve heard that late diagnosed ADHD (I was diagnosed at 17) can culture BPD in that “chronic invalidation”

What does it mean if “pd traits” are mentioned in addition to the BPD diagnosis? When i was diagnosed at 19 i was told i had bpd with antisocial traits, the traits part wasn’t written on my record. Never understood what that means. I dont have either now tho so ig its fine

I have to do my autism assessment before we do other assessments and I just think that’s a cool fun fact that I didn’t need to tell people. Also I love your videos its really interesting to learn

Do you have a study that takes the underdiagnosis of neurodivergence into account?

I’m autistic, and truly thought I had BPD for a while, but I do not. Autism can definitely imitate BPD in ways—hyperfixation/need for approval from a specific person, emotional outbursts, low self worth—that doesn’t mean that most autistic people have BPD. Most do not

I know several women that were misdiagnosed with bpd, one very drastically for years, that are actually autistic. But I also just know a lot of mentally ill people. and those were misdiagnosis, none of them have both.
