@newcreationsnc: COURT UPDATE: In Durham, prosecutors and the defense gave opening statements Wednesday in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial. CONFIRMED: Prosecutors and the defense gave opening statements Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, at the Durham County Courthouse in the murder trial of Miguel Salguero-Olivares, after the fourth and final alternate juror was picked (WRAL, The News & Observer, The Daily Tar Heel). Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill student, was found dead in her Chapel Hill apartment in September 2012. Salguero-Olivares, now 33, was arrested in 2021 and has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, burglary, rape and sexual offense charges. The trial is expected to last five to six weeks. POLICE SAY / ALLEGED: Assistant District Attorney Angela Garcia-LaMarca told jurors DNA and other physical evidence will prove Salguero-Olivares killed Hedgepeth, and urged them to tune out years of speculation she called "noise." Defense attorney James Rainsford told jurors the DNA is not as clear as prosecutors claim, that finding someone's DNA doesn't prove when it was left, and questioned how police collected and handled evidence. Salguero-Olivares is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. STILL UNKNOWN: It's not yet known when the case will go to the jury or when a verdict could come.
