I don’t know what y’all have the water thing. You can literally drink out of every tap, often there are drinking faucets in the city and you can get bottled water in any store glass or plastic bottle. You can also order it at restaurants and sometimes in cafes it’s free. I’d argue it’s even more accessible than in many other countries. I also can’t comprehend the air con thing. I’ll admit there a few days in the year where I wish I had one, but otherwise it’s just really expensive and very bad for the environment.

I’m confused. Did you not go to a supermarket for water? Because glass bottles are definitely way less common than plastic bottles outside of restaurants lol and if your source of water was solely via restaurants that’s your first mistake. Also you’re supposed to open your window for fresh air so I’m confused by that complaint as well.

Most of us sleep with windows open hahah and also growing up without AC it’s normal for us so we don’t sweat as fast. Actually most of us are freezing when there is AC. I think it’s about what you grow up with and adjust to

About the tipping: I think she wasn’t „shocked“ that you tipped her, but rather the size of the tip. In Germany it is also normal to tip, but most round up the bill

To the whole water situation: in restaurants water, or drinks in general are very expensive. A normal bottle of water easily costs 5-7 euros, compared to a bottle in the supermarket that costs not even a euro. Most people value their time in a restaurant as special and want to drink something special like a glass of wine or something they not normally drink in everyday life and therefore don’t order water. But water exists in every restaurant and in most cities there are small „city supermarkets“ where one can easily buy a bottle of water.

The big difference in the US is that tipping is much more built into the wage system, especially in restaurants. In Germany, servers generally receive a regular wage, and tips are more like an extra reward for good service. So if you don’t tip, the person still gets their normal wage.
In the US, however, many service workers have traditionally been paid a lower base wage because tips are expected to make up a significant part of their income. That’s why tipping 15–20% has become much more of a social expectation there. If you don’t tip, you’re not just skipping a little extra reward — you can actually be taking away a meaningful part of someone’s income.
That’s also why the tipping culture feels so different between the US and Germany. In Germany, people still often leave a tip on top of the regular wage, even though the staff doesn’t depend on it in the same way. It’s simply a way of showing appreciation for good service. :)

Of course we are drinking a lot of water and we DO carry it arround, but there are faucets everywhere with super quality water. So there is no need to carry it arround in huge amount. Also you can buy it everywhere in bottles.

Can someone explain to me why Americans are so obsessed with drinking water? I can’t even remember the last time I drank plain water. I mostly consume diluted syrups or powdered vitamin drinks, and occasionally beer or wine. But even that isn’t much—maybe half a liter a day, two or three glasses.
