@thevlasta: Tradition exists precisely because people are difficult. Community wasn’t just socializing — it was survival infrastructure. Maybe we haven’t stopped depending on each other; we’ve just gotten much better at maintaining the illusion that we don’t. 🥒

I hate the phrase "no one's coming to save you." I've had neighbors, strangers, people from school help me in ways my family and best friends haven't. community saves.

I got chickens a year ago. I get more eggs than I need. I give them to people. Sometimes I get donations. Sometimes I don’t. However, the eggs get eaten.

That is why there's a lot of Filipino nurses in healthcare because it's a traditional norm for us to naturally help and take care of one another. We have a word exactly for this called "Kapwa".

Strangers are someone else’s most important person. I think of that a lot. Community makes strangers feel a lot less scary as well.

I hooked my neighbour up with free furniture she needed. She feeds me dinner when she sees me walking to buy a sandwich and she has a portion to spare. Our neighbours look after her kids and text me if something weird happens outside my house. THE VILLAGE WORKS

We are also being forcibly divided. Small steps are being taken to prevent people from speaking to one another I see it every day.

The kikuyu in Kenya say, “people are wealth” and also, “when you help others you help yourself.” The saying no good deed goes unpunished is something we don’t embrace

Growing and processing corn to a nutritional food is a wildly complicated task. Literally a whole community had to figure that out and do it

I'm just not a socializer. 😩 People are too peopley. I cant. I was a preacher's kid. I know how awful they all are. So I send in my extroverts and network that way.

This. I think about this all the time. In macro numbers, our lives are meaningless, in micro community our lives can be crucial.

I do genealogy. Romantisicing the past is definitely a problem, as is considering previous generations dumber or somehow less capable simply because they lived in a world with different technologies available, and community was very important. My 3rd great grandmother was only divorced her abusive husband and survived with 5 daughter in a small farm area because of that community. I have court records of her divorce. I have records of that 3rd great grandfather going on to be cruel to other wives. My greatgrandmother on that side kept an open ledger where she loaned money to those in need, even when she had nothing, but she also kept it open so people knew anybody could see and would pay her back. My parents only got through the first few years of marriage with her help. A grandmother on my other side of the family had to escape an abusive marriage with an infant where her and the infant were starving. Her teenage sister's coworker let her stay at her apartment and got her a job waitressing with her so she could get on her feet. A great grandmother immigrated from another country alone to be a nurse during WW2 and lost her husband while she had two toddlers, and her husband's distant cousins let them stay on their farm- she had no family in this country. I have countless instances where I can see where my ancestors wouldn't have survived without help from those that didn't have to give. The other big fallacy I see is diminishing those that came before or holding arbitrary things up as ideals. All my ancestors were as smart and capable as me, but had different access to information. Even cavemen that were homo sapiens had the same brains we do now- we aren't better, we just have way more technology & different access to information & supplies. Id be lost thrown into a forest with no survival supplies, and having to forage safe plants to eat or make weapons, but they excelled in that world. And people that make costumes & get fussy about pattern and color accuracy- if a pretty fabric was available, they would've got it not paid more for something they liked less

I tried. I tried so hard. So much money, I opened the doors to my home for multiple people, they ultimately took until we ALL had nothing. And, the moment I had nothing left to give them or had to set a boundary to protect us all, or needed support because I worked myself into illness, they left, spread lies, came back and stole. And, ultimately I had to start all over multiple times. Americans don't know what COMMUNITY means.

story time. my downstairs ground floor older neighbour had a weak heart. one evening I thought i heard a loud gasp and a bang as if someone has falled. he didn't answer his door. called police and ambulance immediately. they saw through letter box that his keys are in the lock. police decided to break the door. he wasn't home [Tears of joy] he came back not long after, laughed off the broken door, saying he left through his back porch entrance. he was absolutely fine. but he wouldn't stop thanking me, simply because I cared enough. afterwards we became decent mates.

Makes me question when people say don’t have expectations to be happy in life. It never sat well with me because I also learned “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Is life not meant to be shared and for connection?
