Like people who are constantly dieting feel superior because they feel like they have some control over something and other people are weak because they don’t have the same willpower. in reality it just makes them obsessed with food. like Ben Stiller in dodgeball.

Also alcohol. Conservatives drink more often, and just from my experience, I don’t know many liberals that are HEAVY drinkers like the conservative men I know. They drink to classically bury their thoughts and emotions

I had one argue with me that if I believe that it’s okay for gay people to have s*x then surely I must also believe that pedoph*lia or bestial*ty is also okay, because what’s the difference? I said they are different because gay adults can consent and children and animals can’t. He stopped arguing after that. They don’t understand consent. They just arbitrary labels about what is defiant behaviour and not.

I think Christianity sadly encourages this level of combined self-obsession and self-betrayal. The idea that your highest responsibility is to God and not to the people around you (and only God can judge or absolve you), and the idea that self-denial and repression are virtues, are not concepts shared by other religions but is SO deeply entrenched into the American psyche

I’m a School Psychologist but I double majored in sociology in undergrad. I wish everyone could take at least three courses. I had a class on Deviancy - like that was literally the class name and it touched on this subject heavily. Once you can see through these things it’s almost scary how apparent it is. I’ll watch Fox sometimes and just be like “And that’s a tell, and that’s a tell, and that’s a tell.” 😩
