You bring up the behavior because you want to address what happened. Instead of talking about their choices, the conversation suddenly becomes about how you confronted them, how uncomfortable you made them feel, or why you’re supposedly being unfair. Before long, you’re defending yourself while the original problem barely gets discussed. That reversal can keep someone from ever having to take responsibility. If they can make themselves the injured person, your attempt to address the harm becomes the new offense. Now you’re explaining your intentions, softening your words, or even apologizing while they avoid answering for what started the conversation. Healthy conflict doesn’t require pretending confrontation feels good. Accountability can be uncomfortable. Someone can disagree with how something was brought up and still be willing to look at what they actually did. The problem starts when every attempt to address harmful behavior gets treated like an attack simply because being confronted feels uncomfortable. You shouldn’t have to become the guilty person in the conversation just because you had the nerve to ask someone else to own their part.
