The great writer, witicist, Erma Bombeck once wrote “I purposely raised my daughter the exact opposite of how my mother raised me. And I wound up with a daughter who was exactly like my mother”. Takes a minute to work this out but it makes total sense. lol

I gave my daughter such a calm and safe environment that as an adult she has ZERO conflict resolution skills and lives in fear of confrontation 🙃 We all screw up our kids while thinking we’re helping. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

The consequence has to match the mistake, and I always remind myself and the coparent of that.

I think you’re damned if you do & damned if you don’t. It’s like a crap shoot how our kids will turn out & hopefully they grow to know we did the best we could & that they’re loved. All that you’re saying makes perfect sense & I appreciate your honesty.

I gave both my kids natural consequences. My daughter ran with that information and did the same thing with her kids and has three well adjusted kids one is now becoming a legal adult right now. My son saw the same natural consequences and did the opposite with his kids. They’re the ones that everybody hates in a store because my son and daughter-in-law allow them to trash the store. They allow them to run around in a restaurant and grab food off of peoples plates. They have zero rules, boundaries, or consequences for their kids (who are now teens). Police someday will give them consequences & prison will teach them the rules of society.

You’re extremely self aware and that’s admirable- I have two sons, one that is 12 and one that is 3- can we win at all? No matter what I do I feel like I can’t win with my 12 year old!

can you watch desperate housewives? you need to watch bree and andrew’s relationship. It really affected me how she had to leave him on the side of the road for him to learn to appreciate her.

You’re being too hard on yourself. Kids don’t expect perfection but they want patience and understanding. Teenagers don’t want “parenting”. They don’t want conversations about their shortcomings. They want space from the parent to become adults. As for empathy, teenagers are not good at that. They’re self centered at that stage and empathy comes from pain they haven’t experienced yet.

Idk it sounds like you were a pretty good parent. Your sons are still pretty young. Neuroimaging studies show that brain network efficiency and white matter development actually continue evolving well into the early 30s. Your sons might come around and be more appreciative later in life.

I’ve listened to your series. I immediately recognized your sons. You sound exactly like my friend, except she doesn’t recognize her mistakes. Her three sons are lost losers, spoiled , entitled, and not nice. They cuss her out. She makes excuses.

You’re extremely self aware and I believe that this is the most amazing thing. This type of love and care is not common. They’re lucky. I’m curious how this has impacted your parenting now and your relationship with your children.

My oldest ran away when I started increasing expectations because he was becoming a man. That was 2 years ago. My toxic family made it 100 times worse and I cut most of them off for it. He now does online school at my house and he’s starting therapy again soon. I’ve been back in therapy for a while and we have had many long talks about the last 2 years. He gets it now. I’m not sure if I would have done the work in myself if it hadn’t been for the hell Ive experienced these last two years. I am a better person for accepting some people for who they are and removing them from my life. Alchemize it. 💛

I really like what you said. How would you suggest teaching them how to maintain their home and life without just giving them a task list? They do their chores without complaining but if I told them they didn’t have to do them anymore I think they’d be relieved, lol. But I want them to WANT clean spaces and I want them to offer to assist me in those things. :-)

I need examples , how do I teach it then ? I take away his things for x amount of time or until they show they learned a lesson , I think he is starting to resent me and just not learning anything
