@themastersausage: The fallout from the Devin Jacob Ballard case is now affecting the entire U.S. force in Okinawa. U.S. Forces Japan ordered a 48-hour operational pause for service members on Okinawa after Ballard’s arrest. The pause is being used for standards, discipline, and responsibility training. The Marine Corps also imposed a 48-hour alcohol ban. Active-duty troops on Okinawa are under a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew for 30 days. The Marine Corps says the restrictions apply to active-duty service members, not families or civilian employees. Ballard is a 20-year-old lance corporal assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma and III Marine Expeditionary Force. Japanese police suspect him in the death and robbery of Anna Yagi, 39, at a hotel in Naha. Ballard denies the allegations and remains in Japanese custody. Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, ordered the discipline measures. Okinawa hosts about 30,000 of the approximately 55,000 U.S. service members stationed in Japan. That makes this an island-wide military readiness and alliance issue, not just one Marine’s legal case. The investigation is being handled by Japanese authorities. The restrictions are already in effect for U.S. troops on Okinawa. #usmc #okinawa #marines #military #update #miltok

I was in Okinawa from 2011-2013. we had a safety stand down last over a month. we weren't allowed off base unless we lived there. the locals ended up speaking out and essentially begging them to let us out because their businesses were struggling without us.

I was in Okinawa from 07-09. A marine robbed and beat up a cab driver. We went on lockdown for that. The marines responsible served time in a Japanese prison. Gold cards temporarily banned, five man fireteam when leaving camp, strict attire rules were in place for a couple months. It sucked

When I was in oki, it was already tense between us and the locals. I can only image how strict it is right now. I had marines getting njp for being a few minutes late to check in. That was in 2011.

Yeah It was back in '88 on The Rock. One of our Marines in my unit laid hands on a Japanese hunnie because he was in a drunk jealous rage at the Club, and the Triad was there at the same time. They beat the breaks off of him, and we didn't see him for awhile (allegedly mannapped), it was a huge blow up between The Marines and Japanese Government until he was retrieved, and a lock down of Okinawa in my part ensued. Can't vouch for the whole island. Smh.

When i was on Lejeune, in 2019, they closed down base for a day because the forecast called for 1/8th of an inch of snow... not as serious, but you asked if base ever got closed down.
