Black Panther Party: More than Afros and guns. “We have two evils to fight, capitalism and racism. We must destroy both racism and capitalism.” - Dr. Huey P. Newton The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was founded October 15, 1966 in Oakland, California by Dr. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. It was originally initiated to combat brutality by the Oakland Police Department by policing the police, utilizing contemporary open-carry gun laws. The Black Panther Party also fought to establish revolutionary socialism through mass organizing and community based programs. The Panthers were a controversial group, for their militant views and acts of violence, but their work for the black community will not go unnoticed. Arguably the most well-known social program by the Black Panthers, one in which they started in this country, was the Free Breakfast for School Children Program. It began at St. Augustine’s Church in Oakland, California in 1969 with just a few children. It grew rapidly over time. By the end of 1969, the Black Panthers were feeding 20,000+ children in more then a dozen cities across the United States. They would be fed eggs, chocolate milk, meat, cereal, oranges, and grits for free before heading off for school. It also helps fuel their political agenda. Chicago Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton was running five Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren programs himself. The program helped to raise awareness of the government’s failure to address hunger and poverty in black communities and to promote the importance of nutrition. The Black Panthers’ “service to the people” or “survival programs” did large grocery giveaways to poor families. Bobby Seale seen in this famous photo looking over hundreds of bags of groceries for families in Oakland. It was said that they pressured businesses into donating. Since the Black Panther grocery giveaways attracted thousands, Bobby Seale used it to attract blacks to register for voting and push his political campaign. He ran for Mayor of Oakland in 1973 coming in second out of nine candidates. They were powerful and the FBI didn’t like it. Health in the communities that the Black Panthers served was also a major issue and vital part of their survival programs. They offered free health clinics, help and information on sickle cell anemia, community health classes, drug and alcohol abuse programs, and FREE ambulances. If there was anything that the black community needed, the Black Panthers provided. Even clothing. Their goal was to helped disadvantaged black communities meet their needs and they did that with clothing giveaways for men, women, children and babies. Social health was important. The women of the Black Panther Party were just as important as the men. They were the backbone of the party, making up a large percentage of the members. They fed the children, helped the sick, educated the people and fought for women’s rights. They weren’t scared to carry a gun. The Panthers also offered free commissary to prisoners, free legal education and legal assistance. They also had free busing programs that offered free rides to families to visit those locked up in prison, utilizing 40-passenger vans. They would drop you back off at home, too. The Black Panthers turned kids in the ghetto into scholars with their liberation schools. The goal was for black children reach their highest potential when it came down to education. The first Black Panther Liberation School opened in 1969 in Berkeley, California. Huey Newton had a PhD.,Bobby Seale attended Merritt College, so education beyond high school was important to them. The Black Student Alliance was created in 1972 in the Bay Area offering free books, school supplies, transportation, child care & financial aid to college students. The WIC Program (Women, Infant, Children) was a direct result of the Black Panthers’ work in the community, giving away groceries to poor families and holding free breakfast programs for schoolchildren. #fyp #fypシ #BlackHistory
