I’m sorry, Amy. I am also the president of our rescue. I met someone for a return of two cats one time. These were two hard to place cats because they were more on the shy side. They had them six months. On follow-ups, everything was going fine. Then they messaged saying they needed to return them because they were having a child in a couple months. Like that’s an excuse to return them. When I met them, I was already upset about the situation, but then they were 30 minutes late, so I was double upset. I pretty much didn’t say much to him, just took the cats out of his carrier, put them in ours, and started to walk out, and he said, “I’m sorry, I really hate doing this. I said, I really hate you doing this too. To this day I still feel bad about the encounter and how cold I was towards him, but some days are just way harder than others and we put up with so much crap from people. Sometimes we just come to our breaking point.

Their guilt about their decisions is on them. It's not your fault it didn't work out. Their judgement of you wasn't really fair. If they send any comments or judgement, that's not on you. You did warn them and tried to accommodate. It was going to be hard on them no matter what, why do you need to hold their hands and alleviate their guilt? It's not really fair of them. Hang in there Lady. You do great things and amazing work. ❤️

By the way… I have had 3 different dogs in my lifetime that were mine. #1. If he couldn’t see through the fence he ran up an down it and howled at any dog regardless.. and chewed through any wire as a pup. #2. Was obsessed with water and wanted it all night and needed to pee 2hrs later as a pup every time.. and wouldn’t come inside if it was snowing. #3. Howls at a leaf moving and is needier then any dog I’ve had. That is just “some” of the issues. I took on these babies.. they are mine. You don’t hand them back because they have problems or aren’t exactly what you envisioned. Are people putting kids up for adoption because they cried too much? Don’t adopt a dog if you aren’t ready for struggles.

It is not your responsibility to make them feel good. It makes me so mad that people think anyone rescue should feel anything but disappointment in a return. Choosing the right home is grueling as it is and the feeling of failure is already there when a return happens. Returns are one of the worst parts of rescue.

I worked with a rescue organization for awhile. The manager was always very curt and brief with anyone surrendering or returning a dog. He was professional but all his energy was towards the dog at that moment. It surprised me when I first witnessed it because he was such a lovely man. But I eventually understood it and I respected it so much! It’s honourable what you do and veery emotional. You have enough to manage in that situation and their guilt can’t be included in that.
