@missy23232: Career and interview tips from a talent executive who spent 20+ years on the other side of the table. My client tried to recover an $80K bonus by adding it to his base salary, and the company pulled the offer. After 20+ years making talent and people decisions at the executive level, I've seen the same mistakes cost great candidates great opportunities. These videos exist so you don't have to learn the hard way. #careertips #careeradvice #professionaldevelopment #workplacetips #jobsearchtips
I am not going to negotiate salary. It’s too much of a risk and the job market is so saturated with such talented people. I know if I’m their first option, their second option is probably just as amazing as me.

I got a verbal offer and they did not mention I would not be eligible for the 2026 bonus. I got the paperwork and realized. Can I negotiate becoming eligible? It’s about start date

Why wouldn’t they simply negotiate a later start date? Just start in the new year. Insane.

The fact that this person thinks that was actually an option is concerning in itself.

I had a similar situation but was able to negotiate the offer. I was upfront with my situation - the interview process lasted several months (longer than expected) and I was closer to my rsu vest date by the time I got my offer. I told them how much I would be walking away from - and asked for either a welcome offer to match or to delay my start date for 2 months. They were able to offer a delay to start date.

Asking 80k for the base is crazy! A sign on bonus and possible later start should have sufficed.

As a recruiter this would make the candidate seem out of touch at best, greedy and problematic at worst. I get it. On the other hand, I always try to ask about total comp and what folks are walking away from before generating an offer so this doesn’t happen or we can discuss live.

I negotiated a 10k sign-on bonus and an addition to my base using exactly this method. Thanks for your videos.

What I’ll add to your point is that given we’re in Q4, this is also something perfectly acceptable to discuss in your intake. “Given we’re at the end of the year, for the sake of transparency, my year end bonus will be paid out on X. If I start prior to that date, I will be forgoing my X bonus. Is that something you’d be open to discussing?”

Do we have to show proof of how much we would be getting with our bonus?

Been waiting for a written offer almost 3 weeks. They got upset I asked for it in writing repeatedly so they rescinded the offer! Now I have to find another remote healthcare job 😒 Unemployment told me to report them to the attorney general which I absolutely did last night! I will be filing Unemployment on them tomorrow! In this economy? Go play with your Mother!

Curious what field this was in. More than being greedy hearing those numbers if the bonus was 20% and at least $80k that’s a hefty base, implying a hefty base. Curious is it was “greedy” and/or fact that a company may expect someone who commands a salary like that to be able to more savvy/strategic in their negotiating skills. (Acknowledging this could be my bias because this would be my bigger concern in my own field, I expect everyone to aim high)

Wow, this is so timely. I’m interviewing right now and the exact same scenario would apply to me regarding a year-end bonus. Not 80 K though. 😂 so thank you for the great advice of asking for a sign on bonus. Even if you negotiate a little bit, it’s better than nothing. I almost stopped looking for a fear of how I would feel about losing that bonus. Even though the salaries I’m looking at would’ve way more than made up for it.

$80K bonus story is wild but real — companies pull offers over framing. Appreciate these hard-learned tips, saving this. jobbyo helps with salary insights too

If you’re offered at the top of the range that they originally shared, is asking for 5k over that reasonable when I said I was aligned with the high end of the range ?

Is there an ideal split between base and sign-on that you’ve seen be most achievable for recruiters?
