What do they eat when the snow is covering up the stalks and cover crop? 😂

you can pay $200 a ton for hay and pay $100 a ton for distillers out west and it doesn't come anywhere close to $4.75 a day 🤣

All the row croppers cry about cattle cause compaction, but I see a lot of combines running the last couple days slogging through the mud to get crops out hard to find guys that are willing to allow livestock on crop residue

Logistics and timing! Trucking cow calf pairs back is hard on calves. The other option is to bring them back before they calve and still have to feed hay. In Wyoming we run cows on grass tell about February if it stays open and the snow doesn’t crust over. But we will ship cows if we don’t have grass to run them on for the winter. 750 cows are going to stocks this year because of the drought. Thank you guys for all the insight.

3 things. First, fence. Very few acres are already fenced and most spend time tearing it out, not putting it in. Second, compaction. A cow gives more psi of compaction that a loaded semi. Third, a lot of cover crops are on a cost share with nrcs and they don’t allow grazing or harvesting for hay

Western Nebraska very few people do cover crop in their stalks. Cows need to be in pretty good condition going to stalks. With the corn genetics and a good combine operator, there is minimal corn on the ground nowadays. Yeah we do graze a pile of cattle on stalks but they don’t gain.

A lot of farmers don’t want cattle on their patchers because of the compaction and a lot of people at least pastures don’t take care of it. They’re just there for the game and they leave in tubs and net wrap behind

Trucking is the main issue ! If it’s over 4 hours your trucking bill will be higher than what you pay the farmer

With the stocks now and the new combines I’d take a late grazing pasture over renting stocks

I wish we would put fence back up and background cattle or other animals in the winter. Essentially double cropping

So don’t feed them hay that’s why we have grass only time they need hay is when it snows or gets cold

I’m in Ames. I ask farmers all the time if I can graze cornstalks, they always turn me down because they want to do fall tillage.
