@thesportsontap: In 1992 the New Orleans Saints drafted an offensive lineman named Scott Adell. Then a doctor told him that if he kept playing he could end up permanently paralyzed. He quit on the spot. He never played a down in the NFL. Tonight his son drove in three runs in an elimination game. His boy grew up in Louisville. The kid had epilepsy as a child, and doctors told the family to keep him away from contact sports. Coaches came anyway, every year. The answer was always no. "There was never a doubt in my mind that he'd play another sport." Think about what that man already knew. He had been handed that exact conversation himself. He tried swimming, soccer, basketball, gymnastics. Then he picked up a baseball bat. "I was good enough to play any other sport, but I chose baseball." His mother Nicole has a doctorate in education and was a middle school principal. School was not optional in that house. And here is the part almost nobody knows. While he was still in high school, before he made a dollar in pro baseball, Jo Adell and his family started a foundation. One thing it does is help families afford travel baseball, which quietly prices kids out of the sport. One kid it paid for, two summers running, was Daylen Lile. Lile got drafted. He plays for the Washington Nationals now. After he signed his family donated back to the foundation that had helped them, to pay it forward. The baseball part you can look up. Tenth overall pick in 2017, called the second best prospect in the sport, then four years hitting .214. In April he robbed three home runs in one game, which no player in history had done. In August the Los Angeles Angels traded him to the Cleveland Guardians. Tonight, down two games to none to the Chicago White Sox and one loss from the end, he went 2 for 5 with a triple and drove in three. Cleveland won 9 to 3. A man gave up football so he would not spend his life in a chair. Then he raised a kid who never had to make that choice at all. #MLB #baseball #guardians #cleveland #clevelandguardians
