What happens when history, religion, slavery, colonialism and African identity collide? At the former slave port of Badagry, Nigeria, this speaker delivers a powerful and controversial reflection on Africa’s religious history. He questions the historical relationship between Islam, Christianity and Africa, discusses the violence and exploitation he associates with the spread of both religions, and explains why he personally chose to walk away from Christianity. He also raises wider questions about religious institutions, financial contributions, education, African self-determination and the need to “restructure” the continent. Can Africa redefine its future by confronting difficult parts of its past? What do you think about his argument? Drop your perspective in the comments.
