fyi french here (I can't talk for all of Europe but still) we do NOT have a relationship with our teachers outside of school, I think our teachers/ students relationship are even way more strict than the one you can have in the US

What’s so sad is his teaching is exactly what kids need. Yet he used it as an opportunity to abuse instead of with good faith. It makes you question all the teachers who do actually just care (not in an abusive way).

I was a Boy Scout in the 90s, and had a scoutmaster that was a PDF. Different ages of course, 12 isn’t 17, but the similarities are uncanny. Every single one of us adored the guy. His version of Paris was that he “studied as a masseuse”. The craziest part was that I didn’t report him because I didn’t want to take away the best scoutmaster in the world. Seriously, for everything you said I was like, oh! That’s the high school version. It’s a bizarre feeling, but not surprising in the slightest.

This story time reminded me that my health teacher gave me a “goodbye kiss” when I was 16 or 17. He was the cool teacher too… and I’m just processing this now. 😅

Mind you it’s difficult to point to a specific thing that separates mentoring and grooming, it’s mostly the intent behind the actions and to some degree the emotional connection (if a teacher is supporting you too much emotionally, it’s not necessarily nefarious, but it IS unhealthy and an inappropriate dynamic).
