Despite their structural and historical differences, great masters throughout Tibetan history, such as the 3rd Karmapa (Rangjung Dorje) and Jamgön Kongtrul have emphasized that in actual realization, Dzogchen and Mahamudra merge into the exact same state. Mahamudra tends to emphasize the realization of Emptiness (Tongpa-nyi). Dzogchen tends to emphasize the realization of Luminous Awareness (Rigpa). Ultimately, emptiness and luminous awareness are two sides of the same coin. Think of them as two different mountain trails leading to the exact same breathtaking summit: Dzogchen is the steep, direct path of leaping straight to the peak, while Mahamudra is the structured, graded trail of steadily climbing ridge by ridge.
