@grantonsoil: An NFL fullback grows vegetables in his backyard because they’re more nutrient dense than store bought, then trades the harvest with his teammates. Nine stories above the field his team plays on, there’s a working farm. The 49ers built a quarter acre farm on the roof of their own stadium, and the kitchens pull about 150 pounds off it every week. @juicecheck44 picked up gardening from his mom growing up in Ohio. At his South Bay home, he grows root vegetables outside and keeps a hydroponic tower indoors packed with bok choy, tatsoi, and herbs. Why not just buy them from the grocery store? He says homegrown vegetables carry up to two and a half times the nutrients of store bought. Then, teammate Nick Bosa likes to swap produce harvests with Kyle. At Levi’s Stadium down the road, Faithful Farm opened up in 2016 as the first rooftop farm at a professional sports venue. It’s run organically, and in 2018 it yielded more than 10,000 pounds of produce. The stadium’s chefs hand the farmers a wish list, and whatever the kitchens can’t use gets donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley. More and more athletes are reconnecting with soil for peak performance. Take this as inspiration to start growing a garden like Juice, and fill in the rest of your weekly groceries from farmers nearby, on Localize.
