@cnn: Each day beyond the autumn equinox ushers in darker days and cooler temperatures — the cues for leaves to change color. Across the country, trees and shrubs shut down the production of their energy-making chlorophyll, the pigment behind their lush greens, leaving behind vivid forests of yellows, oranges and reds. This year, lingering warmth could disrupt or shorten the fall foliage window for large portions of the country.
