I judged oysters with Stanley Tucci at the London Oyster Championships!!! This is how the day went. My mother and I were picked up in an Addison Lee and driven to Bentley’s for lunch. The London Oyster Championships take place at Bentley’s, a seafood restaurant in Mayfair, to celebrate the start of native oyster season. There are two competitions. First, the speed shucking: competitors from restaurants across England race to open 12 oysters. Judges deduct points for broken shells, damaged oyster meat, grit and even drops of blood. The fastest shuckers from each heat go through to the final. The second competition is Best Dressed Oyster, which I was judging. Before I get to that, a quick picture of the day: the competitions were held outside on the terrace, where there were unlimited oysters. Downstairs were food and drink tasting stations, including Meexa, Oyster Gin and Talisker, which had made a special whisky for the event. At 3pm, it was time to judge Best Dressed Oyster. I was on the panel with Stanley Tucci, Jeremy Lee, chef proprietor of Quo Vadis in Soho, and food writer and critic Matthew Fort. We tried ten oyster toppings, ranging from spiced sausage and tandoori strawberry to truffle, Jerusalem artichoke, tuna belly and hazelnut. It was absolutely hilarious standing on stage eating oysters with cameras flashing in our faces. Stanley, Jeremy and Matthew were great fun, and all very keen to get stuck in. I took some very serious tasting notes. Some dressings were wonderful; others were so powerful they drowned out the oyster itself. We stepped away to discuss the entries and agreed on our winner: Nicholas from The Sea, The Sea, whose apple and horseradish martini oyster was excellent. Best Dressed Oyster competitors: The Suffolk, Brigadiers, San Pellegrino, The Sea, The Sea, The Grill at The Dorchester, Fallow, Ham Restaurants, Highland Laddie and Logma. Headline sponsors: @sanpellegrino_uk, @charlesheidsieckchampagne and @lochryanoysters, who supplied the oysters. Event supporters and tasting stations: @kamadojoeuk, @anspachhobday, @tripleseat, @oyster_gin, @drinkmeexa, @talisker, @monkey47, @sakarisake.uk and @regalrogue. #oysters #oystergirl #londonoysterchampionships #stanleytucci #London
