@dhein.pdx: This corner of downtown looked very different when Portland’s clock tower opened in 1912. Pioneer Square wouldn’t arrive for another 72 years. Inside was The Oregon Journal. Its presses sat two stories below ground, where passersby could watch the newspapers being printed through the windows along Yamhill. Outside, 2,400 light bulbs once lit the building’s edges. They went dark during World War II and weren’t relit until 1972. A familiar Portland landmark with more going on than its clock face. #portland #portlandoregon #pdx #clocktower #downtown
