“And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.” Genesis 21:19 (KJV) The Hebrew word for “opened” is paqach, meaning to open the eyes, to cause someone to see what was already there. God didn’t create a well in that moment. He opened her eyes to one that was already in front of her. But to understand the weight of this verse, you have to go back. Hagar was a slave. An Egyptian servant used by Abraham and Sarah to produce a child they didn’t want to wait on God for. When she became pregnant, Sarah treated her so harshly that she ran. Alone, pregnant, in the wilderness with nothing. And God found her there. At a well. He spoke to her. And Hagar, a slave, a foreigner, a woman with no power, no status, no advocate, did something remarkable. She gave God a name. She called Him El Roi. “Thou God seest me.” The God who sees. She named that well Beer-lahai-roi. “The well of the Living One who sees me.” Years later, she was cast out again. This time with her son Ishmael. Abraham gave her bread and a bottle of water and sent her into the wilderness. The water ran out. Her son was dying. And the Bible says she set the boy under a bush, walked away about a bowshot, sat down, and said, “Let me not see the death of the child.” She couldn’t watch. She lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard. And He paqach her eyes. And she saw a well. The first time God found her, it was at a well. She called Him the God who sees. The second time, when she had nothing left, when the pain was too much to even witness, He opened her eyes. And what did she see? A well. The same God. The same provision. The same encounter. It doesn’t matter if you fled into your desert and it was of your own doing, or if you were cast out into your desert by someone else. El Roi doesn’t forget, because centuries later, He met another Gentile woman at a well. She was in her own wilderness. And He told her, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” Because Jesus, the Messiah, God in the flesh, is forever faithful. ❤️ #christiantiktok
