@thecahanas: Tonight Dvir and I went to the Miami Federation's Young Leadership Division's event to commemorate October 7th. It was held at the Miami Holocaust Memorial - a tremendous tribute to the victims of the Shoah. The choice of location was intentional: October 7th marks the deadliest single day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. The organizers made a daring choice - creating a sacred space so we, the attendees, could share our own stories. Hearing from person after person about how their lives have changed - one person made Aliyah, another person had a career change to now work for the Jewish community, some lost friends, others gained new ones. Where we were when we first heard the news - one person shared she was in Dubai and her tour guide said he could not guarantee her safety so she should put away her Magen David necklace. Another shared that she was raised Christian but had a Jewish mother and in adulthood connected to her Judaism - and then found out about the attack and felt the pain of the Jewish people; she felt the spark of Jewish peoplehood. Each of us has a story - of where we were when we found out the news, the moment we realized it was something more than just the "usual" domestic terror that happens in Israel, the friends we lost and the friends we made, what it was like for us to visit Israel since that day. How we gathered in fear, how we gathered again in resilience and hope. Remember your story. Write it down. Capture these memories. Seal it in an envelope. I can't tell you when you'll need to read it, but you will know when that time is. Oseh Shalom Bimormav - may God bring peace both above and below so we never know war.
