St. James Davis — The Chimpanzee Attack of 2005 St. James Davis was a 62-year-old former NASCAR driver living in West Covina, California. During the 1960s, Davis and his wife, LaDonna, took in a young chimpanzee named Moe, whom they claimed to have rescued from poachers in Tanzania. The couple raised Moe as part of their family for more than three decades. He lived inside their home, wore clothes, watched television, and was treated almost like a human child. However, Moe had a history of aggression. After several biting incidents, authorities removed him from the couple's home in 1999 and transferred him to an animal sanctuary. On March 3, 2005, the Davises visited Animal Haven Ranch in California to celebrate Moe's 39th birthday. While they were preparing to share a birthday cake with him, two other chimpanzees, Buddy and Ollie, escaped from their enclosure and attacked the couple. LaDonna lost her left thumb while trying to protect herself. St. James suffered devastating injuries, losing all the fingers on both hands, an eye, parts of his face, and portions of his feet and other body parts. The attack ended when a relative of the sanctuary's owner shot and killed both chimpanzees. Moe was not involved. St. James was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent numerous surgeries. After approximately six months in the hospital, he was eventually released. The incident exposed the serious dangers of keeping chimpanzees in captivity as pets and raised questions about the security and management of private animal facilities.
