I did this at a factory a couple of years ago. Three months later that place shut down. It had been running for almost 100 years. They wouldn't hire anyone new even though I was the only person on our (supposed to be 4 man team). I referred multiple people to fill the lost positions and they never even looked at them. When I asked why they hadn't hired anyone they told me "nobody wants to work these days"

I didnt have this exact experience but I did spend 3 years becoming a very important mid level person at my job, was the only person who knew how almost everything worked individually and was the only person who made every department head talk to one another. I almost always had all the information even if that info wasnt in my department, i knew all of the protocols that my department used, plus created several myself. Then I started putting applications out and my job fired me when they got a reference call. I have people in my life who still work at that place and they say its a train wreck now, with the exact problem with everything being the exact job I had that they CANNOT hire a person to fill. That business is slowly dying because its beyond dysfunctional and they fired the glue that held all the smaller departments together and forced communication. My personal satisfaction of literally being irreplaceable is immense and I cannot overstate the ego boost that gives me.
