In an interview with Reuters, Bagayoko called for the government to prioritise investing in education and impose higher taxes on billionaires. His actions drew some criticism on social media, where he was accused of fuelling the unrest. An estimated 250,000 demonstrators have taken to the streets in France. Bagayoko, a member of left-wing party La France Insoumise, became the mayor of Saint-Denis in March 2026. It is one of the poorest departments in France.
