@thefranswah: Radio stations typically run a voice through six things, and you can put the same six on your own mic. 1. A HIGH-PASS FILTER It cuts everything below about 100 hertz. There's almost none of your voice down there, just rumble from your environment. 2. A DOWNWARD EXPANDER When your voice gets quiet, it turns the sound down even more, so your fan, your keyboard and your breathing get quieter between your words. 3. A DE-ESSER It turns down the sharp hiss of your S sounds, and leaves the rest of your voice alone. 4. AN EQ BOOST AROUND 3,500 HERTZ That's the range that makes your words clear. Some radio mics have a switch for exactly this boost. 5. A COMPRESSOR It makes the gap between your quietest and loudest words smaller, so your voice has a steadier volume and sits at the front of the mix. 6. A LIMITER A ceiling your voice can't get louder than, so a laugh or a shout doesn't distort. Put the expander before the compressor. Without it, the compressor raises the quiet sounds between your words too. Save this for the next time you set up your mic. #podcasting #streamingtips #micsetup #audioengineering #radiovoice #compressor #deesser

You are right. but you forgot one important major thing. the order of your processing is make a big difference. it needs to be 1. expander/noise gate. 2. EQ 3. compressor. 5. de-esser. and last 6. limiter to keep your mic from ever peaking

how do I get rid of an annoying low pitch buzz in my studio? I think it's caused my electrical cords parallel to my xlr cables or something. I can't tear the studio down to start over, I need an easier method to try!

If this is an app with a pre-made chain like this, you probably should consider the EQ to have a low- and high-pitched option if you haven't already. What sounds good on a lower, more masculine voice can and will sound way worse on something higher/more feminine.

as a Brodcast Engineer who installs studios your not fully correct we use parametric compressors/compelor and noise gates with automatic gain control after a preamp we try to let as much of the neutral sound coming from your microphone as possible then normalize it for recording and streams as for the rf transmiters we have bandwidth impacts we have to adjust for so we have a final processor that normalizes everything then adds the station group preferred signature processing across all theres stations.
