Use oxygen absorbers inside mylar bags for long term food storage. Oxygen absorbers fight air. Use them for dried foods with residual moisture (grains, beans, pasta, freeze dried meals, rice, oats, flour). Desiccants (silica gel) fight moisture. Use them for pure dry powders (baking soda, salt, sugar, borax, cornstarch, chemical compounds). Not best to use both in the same container. They interfere with each other. Oxygen absorbers actually need a tiny amount of moisture to activate, and desiccants remove that moisture. Use one or the other based on what you're storing. A few things worth knowing: Match the size of the oxygen absorber to the container. 300 to 500cc per gallon. 1,500 to 2,000cc per 5 gallon bucket. Once you open a bag of oxygen absorbers, use them within a few hours or reseal the remainder immediately in an airtight container. Air exposure activates them fast. Silica gel desiccants can be recharged indefinitely by baking at 200 to 250 degrees for 1 to 2 hours. Cool them in a sealed jar so they don't reabsorb moisture before use. Freeze dried food in mylar with an oxygen absorber lasts 25+ years and retains most of its nutritional value. Best long term food storage technology available.
