Replying to @sydney0bennett Are telling your therapist something and showing emotion the same? Yes in that they are both forms of vulnerability. But they are also different. For most people, showing emotion feels more vulnerable and less accessible than talking about it. Trauma research shows that people can talk about experiences while still keeping the emotional part of it suppressed. That’s why you can explain something without fully feeling it. Actually feeling and expressing the emotion means that emotional system is activated, which is why it feels more intense. Clinically, in my experience, most patients talk about things before they are able to show the emotion in session. Not avoidance. That’s how the nervous system protects you. Same process, different levels of vulnerability, and typically one thing happens before the other. The goal is to be able to talk about things at the same time you’re feeling and expressing emotions. Easier said than done 🫶🏻 —————————————————————— #complextrauma #cptsd #traumahealing #cptsdrecovery #therapistsontiktok
