The day we walked our boy into surgery for his leg amputation. 🤍 We actually found out about Nate’s proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) when he was just 6 months old. We spent years going back and forth to ortho in Jackson, trying different things and just never feeling like we were getting the answers we needed. We went back year after year. We tried the brace, the shoe buildup, and different ways to help him. Our last visit was when he was 6, and at that point Nate had pretty much learned how to use his little leg exactly the way it was. It was shorter, but it wasn’t really affecting him in his day to day life, and he was able to move around and do things on his own. So, after years of hearing “come back in 6 months” or “come back in a year,” we just kept letting him live his life and adapt the way he knew how. But as he got closer to 9, I started noticing more frequent falls, more unsteadiness, and little things that made me realize his leg was starting to affect him more. So I made the decision that it was time to go back and see where we were, and what our next plan needed to be. I walked into that appointment with so much mom guilt, wondering if I had waited too long to go back. If maybe we had went back sooner. And then Dr. Wright explained that, in cases like Nate’s, we likely wouldn’t have been given our real options until around the age of 10 anyway especially when you look at cases like Nathaniel’s. That appointment was when we really started realizing just how much had changed and that we were finally at the point where we had some big decisions to make. We didn’t realize quite how big. When we went back at almost 10, that 4 cm difference at 6 had grown to 10 cm, with an estimated difference of around 13 cm as he grew. We saw 3 different orthopedic surgeons one at UMMC, Ochsner, and Shriners. Now we were faced with the choice between years of leg lengthening surgeries starting with a hip surgery and a knee reconstruction to stabilize everything enough for the amount of lengthening he would need or amputation. I believe deep down, I think I already knew what my heart was telling me, but I kept praying there had to be another way. I just couldn’t bring myself to accept it. 💔 THAT, AS A MOTHER, WAS THE HARDEST DECISION I HAVE EVER HAD TO MAKE. Nathaniel was COMPLETELY against surgeries. And I just couldn’t fathom taking away the rest of his childhood with surgery after surgery, watching him spend years in recovery instead of just being a kid. And then there were the thoughts of what that could mean for his early adult years the pain, the medications, the fear of addiction, and the financial burden if those surgeries continued over those years. But let me tell you about GOD! What we didn’t know until they got in surgery that Nate didn’t have the ligaments, tendons & muscles needed to stabilize and support his knee. Without being able to reconstruct and stabilize that knee first, the leg lengthening surgeries wouldn’t have been possible for him. Dr. Wright had a clean cut also is why his amputation took half of the time! And hearing Dr. Wright tell us that after his amputation… Y’all, that was nothing but God. 🤍 He knew what we couldn’t see. He knew the answer before we ever had it. And somehow, right in the middle of one of the hardest days of our lives, He showed us how REAL he is! We thank God every day for Dr. Wright and the way he cared for Nathaniel as a human being first, not just another pay day, another surgery, or a guinea pig. He gave us empathy, honesty, and the reassurance we needed. If you don’t usually like, share, or comment on our videos, please let this be the one you do. If our story can reach even one mama or one family walking through PFFD or something similar, and maybe we can help them feel a little less alone or maybe they can help us along the way then that’s worth sharing every bit of it. #fyp #viral #pffd #onestepatatime #amputeelife
