On August 7, 2016, 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding the world's tallest water slide, Verrückt, at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas. The 168-foot-tall attraction, whose name means "insane" in German, was marketed as a record-breaking thrill ride that reached speeds up to 70 mph. Caleb was attending a special day for state legislators and their families with his father, Kansas Representative Scott Schwab, when the tragedy occurred. The slide featured three-person rafts that were supposed to stay secured using a combination of seatbelts and safety nets. Caleb rode in the front seat of the raft alongside two women. As the raft went airborne over the second hump, it struck the overhead safety net and metal support hoops. The impact was catastrophic, Caleb was decapitated instantly, while the two women suffered severe facial and bone injuries. Investigators found that the ride had a history of safety issues long before that day. Riders had previously complained of rafts lifting off the slide, and internal park emails revealed warnings about the lack of proper engineering oversight. Verrückt had been designed without qualified engineers and was rushed to completion for a television appearance on Xtreme Waterparks. Following the incident, the park was shut down, and Schlitterbahn executives were charged with second-degree murder and other crimes related to negligence and reckless endangerment. Most charges were later dropped due to insufficient evidence, but the park permanently closed Verrückt and dismantled it in 2018. Caleb's family received a settlement exceeding $20 million from multiple parties involved in the ride's construction and operation. The case exposed the waterpark's disregard for safety testing and became one of the most disturbing examples of amusement park negligence ever recorded in the United States. #Fyp #truestory #viral #
