One American veteran. One fallen American soldier. A moment of remembrance that speaks louder than words. 🇺🇸🇵🇱❤️ At the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, 101-year-old WWII veteran Corporal David Marshall stopped to honor a fellow American. He greeted him as a brother-in-arms and offered a prayer at his final resting place. His name was Second Lieutenant Richard Kresge Tice, the only American buried among the British and Polish soldiers at this cemetery. His story is one of extraordinary courage, determination, and sacrifice. Born in Pennsylvania, Richard refused to stand on the sidelines while war consumed Europe. With the United States still neutral, he traveled to Canada and volunteered for the Polish Armed Forces in exile. He joined the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade under Major General Stanisław Sosabowski. Although he initially spoke no Polish, his comrades welcomed him and affectionately called him

Although he initially spoke no Polish, his comrades welcomed him and affectionately called him "Rysiu." In September 1944, Richard parachuted into the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden. On September 21, he landed near Driel with his Polish comrades, determined to help the surrounded British forces fighting for survival across the Rhine in Oosterbeek. During the night of September 23–24, he crossed the Rhine under enemy fire and reached the defenders on the northern bank. But on September 24, 1944, Richard was killed by German artillery fire in the woods of Oosterbeek. He was only 22 years old. A young American who had crossed an ocean to fight for the freedom of people he had never met. A soldier who chose to serve alongside men whose language he initially could not speak, but whose courage and determination he shared. Today, Richard rests in Grave 17.B.15 at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, surrounded by the Polish and British soldiers with whom he fought. His headstone bears the Polish military eagle, a lasting reminder of the uniform he proudly wore. More than eight decades later, another American soldier stood before his grave. David Marshall, a veteran of the same war, bowed his head and prayed for a young man who never had the chance to grow old. Two Americans. Two soldiers. Two very different journeys through the same war. One returned home and lived to tell his story. The other gave his life at just 22. Richard Kresge Tice, your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, soldier. We will remember you. 🫡❤️ #Richard #Historia #Polish #LestWeForget #Anglia
