Title: Subway Emergency Exit Hatches Information: Have you ever wondered what are those large yellow metal doors that can sometimes be found embedded in sidewalks wherever a subway line operates underneath? Well These are subway emergency exit hatches, and they provide an additional escape route from underground subway tunnels during an emergency. These hatches are normally positioned directly above or near subway tunnels and usually sit flush with the sidewalk, although some are slightly elevated and protected by metal guardrails. In certain locations, they are also built alongside subway ventilation grates. They are normally painted in bright sunflower yellow because yellow generally represents caution. This color coding also helps first responders quickly distinguish the hatches from the surrounding environment, it makes it a lot easier to locate at night or during poor visibility. Similar emergency hatches can also be found on some elevated subway station platforms. Inside the subway tunnels, these emergency exits are generally located along the bench wall and are identified by yellow markings and red “Emergency Exit” signs. During an evacuation, a person inside the tunnel can release the hatch by pushing a lever and applying enough force for it to open successfully. If someone needs to enter one of these hatches from street level, it typically requires a specialized key tool that’s inserted into a locking mechanism to unlock the hatch. MTA maintenance crews routinely inspect and service these emergency exits to ensure they’re always in proper working condition. Some hatches are also equipped with motion sensors that can alert the appropriate authorities if they’re opened without authorization. Thanks for watching, follow for more!
