Just download the smartEX app for the Shinkansen. So much easier to book in advance and it just gives you a QR code for the gates.

I swear I was so confused on the terminal the first time I did that because I was like oh there's one half the price why get the expensive one maybe takes a bit longer but yeah no it wasn't for the shinkansen 😅

I accidentally bought a 7am ticket once and then at 7pm I was terribly confused. I had to stand in the gap between cars for 2 hours. lesson learned!

just bought it months in advance over "japan experiences", they handle the rest of the sale as soon as the tickets are open for your train. we had no problems and received our tickets 3 weeks before the actual trip. ☺️
