Jennifer Moreno knew wounded soldiers were lying ahead. She also knew the ground between them was filled with hidden devices. The 25-year-old Army nurse went forward anyway. On October 6, 2013, Capt. Jennifer M. Moreno was accompanying U.S. special operations forces on a nighttime mission in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province. Moreno was an Army nurse assigned to the Madigan Army Medical Center and serving with a Cultural Support Team. Her role placed her alongside special operations forces during missions where female personnel could interact with Afghan women and children. That night, the team entered a compound in Zhari District. Then the first hidden device detonated. The area had been deliberately seeded with additional devices, creating an extraordinarily dangerous situation as soldiers tried to reach the wounded. Moreno initially remained where she had been directed. Then she saw fellow soldiers who needed medical help. Her training told her what they needed. The danger around them told her what reaching them might cost. She moved forward. As Moreno attempted to reach and treat the wounded, another expl*sive device detonated. She did not survive. Moreno was 25 years old. Three other soldiers also lost their lives during the operation, and numerous others were wounded. For her actions that night, Moreno was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with โVโ device for valor. She was also posthumously promoted from first lieutenant to captain. Her story wasn't simply that of a nurse who happened to be caught in a battle. When wounded soldiers needed medical care in a place where every step could carry another danger, she made a decision. She moved toward them. The safest direction was back. Her patients were ahead. Jennifer Moreno went forward.
