1. 𝗚𝗢 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗝𝗢𝗕 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗚𝗢 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠. One career mistake I see people make is learning first and investigating demand later. Someone says Data Analytics pays well, so you spend six months learning it. Then you finally open job boards and discover employers want SQL, Power BI, industry knowledge and experience you haven't built. Reverse the order. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁. 2. 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝟯𝟬 𝗝𝗢𝗕 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦. Not three. Not the one exciting vacancy somebody sent you. Find around 30 roles similar to the career you're considering. Put them in a document or spreadsheet. Now look for repetition. What skills appear repeatedly? What tools? What experience? What qualifications? What problems are these companies actually hiring somebody to solve? 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴. 3. 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗫𝗘𝗦. 𝗔 — I can already do this. 𝗕 — I have done something similar. 𝗖 — I genuinely don't know how to do this. Your career transition should be built around Box C. You may discover that you don't need an entirely new professional identity. You need three missing competencies. That is a much cheaper problem to solve. 4. 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘. If you're an accountant who wants to enter technology, your first move doesn't have to be software engineering. Fintech may value what you already understand about reconciliation, controls, payments and financial operations. A teacher might have a shorter path into EdTech, instructional design or customer education than into cybersecurity. A salesperson may already have much of what is required for SaaS sales. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. 5. 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗝𝗢𝗕. Courses teach curricula. People doing the work can tell you what the job actually requires. Ask them: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯? Three good conversations can save you months of studying the wrong things. 6. 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡. 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘. This is where many career changers get stuck. Course completed. Certificate downloaded. Another course started. But an employer isn't buying the number of hours you spent learning. They're trying to reduce the risk of hiring you. Create something that makes your new ability visible: a project, case study, portfolio, analysis, process improvement or real problem you solved. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵. 7. 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗬. Apply selectively. Talk to recruiters. Ask people in the industry to review your positioning. Pay attention to where you're getting rejected. If five employers keep pointing to the same missing capability, that's useful information. Your applications can become market research. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚. The goal is to understand what the market values, identify the shortest distance between what you already know and what employers need, then learn enough to cross that distance. Before you spend six months acquiring another skill, spend one week making sure you're learning the right one. 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦. - @iakinlabi
