A humanoid robot is now directing traffic in the rain on the streets of Hangzhou. During China’s National Day holiday, DEEP Robotics deployed several DR02 humanoid robots in Hangzhou’s West Lake district to test traffic control, crowd management and tourist assistance around busy intersections. The DEEP Robotics DR02 is an outdoor humanoid robot with full-body IP66 water and dust protection. During sustained rain, these AI traffic robots continued operating around pedestrians, scooters and cars while changing position according to traffic conditions. DR02 is rated to work from minus 20 to 55 degrees Celsius and can move at speeds of up to 4 meters per second. This Chinese humanoid robot uses LiDAR, depth cameras and wide-angle cameras, backed by 275 TOPS of onboard AI computing power. Its computer vision system is also being tested for detecting riders without helmets, overloaded scooters, pedestrians crossing restricted areas and vehicles stopping past road markings, followed by spoken warnings. The Hangzhou robot trial puts Physical AI and embodied AI directly into an outdoor smart-city environment with rain, moving vehicles and pedestrians. Seeing an IP66 humanoid robot working beside active traffic gives us useful data about where autonomous robots could operate outside factories and research labs.
