UPDATE: The Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, has sounded a high-level alarm over the proposed Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026. Appearing before a joint parliamentary committee, the Governor warned that the bill, in its current form, is a recipe for "economic disaster" that could trigger a massive slide of the Ugandan Shilling and fuel runaway inflation. Atingi-Ego's primary concern is that the bill's restrictions on cross-border transactions and foreign funding will choke the very inflows that keep the economy afloat. He noted that Uganda’s foreign exchange reserves—currently at $6 billion—are the backbone of national independence. "The moment you tamper with these inflows, we risk running down our reserves," he cautioned, adding that without these buffers, Uganda would lose its ability to manage its own financial destiny. The Central Bank is now urging Parliament to make technical refinements to the Bill to avoid reversing three decades of economic progress. #uganda #santamediaug
