Remains identified in 2025; Marine PFC Luther “Dusty” Rhodes was Killed in Action on October 7, 1942 during the Third Battle of the Matanikau on Guadalcanal, he was 18 years old… Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina to Harley & Cora Rhodes on March 22, 1924, Luther Leru “Dusty” Rhodes had nine siblings. He grew up on the family farm near Hendersonville and enlisted on the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen on November 11, 1941 with his parents permission. Dusty was in boot camp at Parris Island when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After training he was assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. They came ashore at Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942 and participated in the capture of the airfield which would become Henderson Field. On the afternoon of October 7th, it was discovered that a group of around 150 Japanese soldiers had established a position on the US side of the Matanikau River. During the ensuing battle when the Japanese attempted to break out, Dusty was killed by a shot to the head. He was found the next morning and buried at the 1st Marine Division Cemetery, but postwar his remains could not be identified when the remains there were exhumed to be brought home. PFC Luther “Dusty” Rhodes was Memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines. He also had a memorial marker at Edneyville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Edneyville, North Carolina where his parents and some of his siblings would be buried. The years passed, his parents and all of his siblings had passed away except for his youngest brother Marvin T Rhodes. When in 2025 it was announced that a set of unknown remains from Guadalcanal which had been buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii had been identified through DNA as PFC Luther “Dusty” Rhodes. On March 28, 2026, he was buried with full military honors in the empty plot with his memorial marker at Edneyville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Edneyville, North Carolina.
