Breaking News that happened in Nigeria in the last 12 hours, Oct 9, 2026. ‎ ‎The Federal Government has announced a 30-day petrol discount at filling stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), in a move aimed at reducing the burden of rising fuel prices on Nigerians. ‎ ‎The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to reduce petrol prices, begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage and implement outstanding agreements with workers. ‎ ‎The Federal Government has warned that bringing back petrol subsidies could push petrol prices to at least ₦2,000 per litre and weaken the naira to approximately ₦3,000 against the US dollar within months. ‎ ‎A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, seeking to prevent anti-corruption agencies from freezing his bank accounts or seizing his properties. ‎ ‎Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, a renowned communication scholar and veteran member of Nigeria’s media and communication community, has been confirmed dead at the age of 85. ‎ ‎MTN Nigeria has confirmed a network outage affecting some of its customers in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and other parts of the country. ‎ ‎The Nigerian Navy has uncovered approximately 40,000 litres of substance suspected to be crude oil stored in a large dugout reservoir in the Oteghele general area of Delta State. ‎#nigerianews #trendingnews #happeningnow #newsupdate #breakingnews
