She was raised by her Scottish grandparents in the United Kingdom where she was educated, but occasionally lived with her mother in Nigeria. In fact, she was only on holiday in Nigeria when she decided to enter Miss Nigeria just to pass the time! Her father came from the Ham people in Southern Kaduna, while her mother is half-Scottish. The Contrøversy: Her win was not without drama. In 1990, Binta Sukai's eligibility to compete was questioned as she was rumoured to be non-Nigerian, until it was confirmed that the aspiring fashion designer was only one-quarters Scottish. Nigerians were not used to seeing a mixed-heritage, UK-raised girl with a slight accent win the most Nigerian crown. Some called her "not Nigerian enough." But the organizers confirmed her roots and the crown stayed. She was celebrated as the first Miss Nigeria from Northern Nigeria. Life After The Crown: Unlike many queens who disappeared, Binta stayed in Nigeria for a few years after her reign before returning to Europe, enrolling at the Paris Academy of Fashion where she studied fashion and history. She turned her passion into a career. She said being Miss Nigeria back then still opens doors for her and she built a career as a fashion consultant, judge and mentor. She has made several appearances at Nigerian fashion shows, where she is often a judge; these include the Runways Dreamz in 2007, and the Young Designers Creative Design competition in 2009. She also tried to give back — in 2009 she announced plans to launch a beauty pageant/reality show called Face of Peace to champion peace in Nigeria after years of ethno-religious crisis, though the show never aired. On the personal side, in 2008, Sukai gave birth to her daughter. In an interview, she stated that she does not intend to marry the father, as she is afraid of divørce, a fear she linked to her own parents' separation. Today, Binta lives quietly between Europe and Nigeria, still fabulous, still consulting in fashion, and she has revealed she already has a fashion line outside Nigeria and hopes to launch it at home soon.
