@thetrishawolfe: It’s really common that people who intellectualize may feel resistant to typical therapy activities, including grounding or somatic activities because they feel like they don’t work for them or that they’re too aware to do them or because they’ve tried them all before. That makes sense! Of course our brain would resist anything that might bring us into more safety or more presence when our entire survival system is built on functional freeze and trying to keep us from feeling anything, wanting anything, being ourselves, etc. Sometimes, we may feel shame about this. Other times, we may feel pride or superior - a feeling that we’re too smart or self-aware for this (to be clear - this too is a survival response - that covers up deeper feelings of shame, grief, fear, and anger). of shame, grief, fear, and anger). The good news is, the outcome of these activities matters farless, than observing what happens when we try it. From there, we can use memory reconsolidation and other neurobiological techniques to repattern those learnings. Whenever I do the sense check I just note it. Like “great, I can see the book next to me” and I still feel awful. It feels so pointless to me, not grounding at all.

when i get in to moments where im thinking in circles and its causing me a lot of distress ive noticed that reading my tarot has helped me. its a form of staying present and being in touch with yourself that some other exercises arent useful for me with. i know it can sound kinda silly, using tarot for this purpose- i dont really take much stock in a lot of the meanings i guess for life but in a way it can help guide you. if i cant focus on working in my room and its stressing me out i can always ask them if i should work there, what place has the best energy to work in and where am i at right now. and depending on the answer i can glean some kind of response that aligns in some direction.

The 5/4/3 makes me feel rage. I don’t understand this activity at all. How does this help anything at all? In fact I immediately swiped as soon as you said it! Then I was like hold on, let’s go listen to this 😅

My issue is that when my therapist asked me to feel things in my body, I just don’t feel them. She was always asking me. Where do you feel that? how does it feel? and there was just nothing.

Well that explains the panic attack I had the first time I tried to do a body scan meditation xD

Doesn’t work for me. Mostly just makes me feel like a preschooler. And please don’t ask me, a master of dissociation, to feel anything in my body.
I’ve found more basic, sensory grounding techniques helpful: holding an ice cube, taking a really cold or hot shower, or simply asking myself, “Have my circumstances actually changed, or is this my anxiety talking?”

Whenever I try doing anything like this it just feels performative or I can’t help but think I’m doing it wrong, especially if it doesn’t have the supposed effect.

I had a therapist tell me to imagine myself in a bubble when I was feeling anxious in public. I told her that wouldn’t work because the bubble isn’t real and couldn’t protect me from people standing too close to me. She told me to just try harder to pretend it was real. I actually felt like I was crazy for not being able to.

i am autistic, this type of exercise usually upsets or angers me because i dont get pulled out of being present in the moment as much as being present in my physical self... and for me a mental exercise will not ground me because i need rather controlled physical input

I'm most of all frustrated to be reduced to a meat machine I never had any real connection with to begin with and in which i don't have much interest. I'm working on it but I'm still in the annoyed-stage.

My anxiety is so much lower when I isolate myself. I’ll stick to that 😊
