as a postpartum RN, i listen to EVERY FAMILY MEMBER. they know the patient better than me, and even a simple headache i NEED to know. things slip through the cracks, but not on my watch. cases like this infuriate me.

Unfortunately medical racism is alive and well. I tell all the parents and their partners I teach CPR to that are POC to advocate STRONGLY for yourselves. And as healthcare professionals we need to be on the lookout and call it out.

People are saying nurses don’t act like this — ok I had a spinal fluid leak and couldn’t stand for longer than a minute without feeling like my head was going to explode - I was told my pain was normal and sent home - I was back in two days for a blood patch because i literally could not sit up or stand 🤩

I literally almost died because my OB nurse told me my shortness of breath was "normal" after delivery and that my blood pressure was high because I had "anxiety"...they sent me home. I returned 38 hours later in heart failure, postpartum cardiomyopathy! I had an enlarged heart and fluid in my lungs. I spent two weeks in the ICU. All because my nurse ignored me 🥺

While it is true, that people don’t listen to patients the other truth is is that hospitals do not staff enough nurses to handle the amount of patients that we get. This lady is playing secretary and having to monitor a patient. It’s just too much.

I’ve only had one nurse neglect me and it was when I had my first child at 16 years old. When I had my second baby, I had told my OBGYN about her. She was still working there so my doctor fired her because it was one of her nurses.

I started bleeding out from my epidural as well as 2nd degree hemorrhage. They thought it was only hemorrhage and it took my nurse 2-3 hours advocating for me until everyone in the room realized I was bleeding so much from my back. Had to have it packed and needed several blood transfusions

i had a spinal fluid leak from the epidural, they did a blood patch approximately 30 mins after i gave birth and they said the headache should go away immediately.. it didn’t. i got discharged the next day. went back at midnight bc of my blood pressure and headache still. prescribed me percocet and said it would go away. even when i asked for another blood patch but “it’s rare that people need a second one” .. a week later im running a fever so we go back to the ER they do 2 ct scans and 2 mris (thought i had a brain bleed and that i needed brain surgery.. which i didnt) spent 5 days in the hospital all for them to tell me i needed another blood patch and then i was fine. why do doctors not listen to postpartum or pregnant women??
