Verdi composed this opera with a piano in his own bedroom, racing against a premiere he almost failed to orchestrate in time. 🎭 In 1853, Verdi was juggling two operas at once. While rehearsing Il trovatore in Rome, he had a piano installed in his bedroom to get ahead on La traviata, promised to Venice for just weeks later. He arrived in the city exhausted, without a single note orchestrated. And there was another obstacle: the story of a contemporary courtesan struck the authorities of Teatro La Fenice as indecent, forcing the action back to around 1700, in period costume. Only decades later did the opera return to the present day, as Verdi had always wanted. ✨ In this Michael Mayer production, the stage is a single space that shifts with the seasons. The toast you see happens under the clear light of a beginning; when Alfredo's father appears, in the second act, the set turns to autumn; and the story closes in winter, in a shuttered room. The same space moves through the year as the heroine loses the glow of that first night. 🎤 Giving voice to Violetta here is Diana Damrau, the German soprano. She says she decided to become an opera singer as a girl, after watching a film based on this very story: the role that made her dream is the same one she sings in this video. Beside her, as Alfredo, is the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, one of the great names of bel canto. In this production, which premiered in December 2018, he sang the role of Alfredo for the first time in his career.
