I grew up in PA, near Amish country, but we’re not Amish. My dad and brother got on the roof one Saturday morning and started ripping off the shingles. Within a half hour, 3 neighbor men and my uncle were there (all unasked), buckling on tool belts to come help. My mom jumped in the car and drove to a nearby farm for corn, then went to the store to get stuff for a hamburger/hot dog cookout. At the end of the day, the roof was completely finished and the neighbors’ families all showed up for an impromptu neighborhood barbecue. It was just second nature to show up for others. My husband’s parents were born and raised in South Dakota. They get offended if anyone even suggests they might need help with something-they say they can do it all themselves. I told my husband it’s the difference between being raised with the barn building mentality vs the frontier mentality.
