@donnyjkimball: There are plenty of places to see Susuki, or Japanese pampas grass, in Japan, including Hakone’s famous Sengokuhara, but few compare to Soni Kogen. Located way up in the highlands of eastern Nara Prefecture, Soni Kogen is a vast grassland spread beneath Mt. Kuroso. From October into November, the Susuki covers the plateau in feathery plumes that shift from silver to gold as the light changes. It is basically the quieter side of Japanese autumn writ large, with the grasses taking on the rust and gold colors known locally as Kusa Momiji, or “Grass Autumn Leaves.” Alas, the only catch is actually getting there, as Soni Kogen is tucked away in the rural village of Soni, meaning that public transportation is limited. Still, the journey is more than worth the effort when the Susuki are at their best...
