YOUR CHILD DID NOT COME INTO THIS WORLD OWING YOU MONEY. YOU CHOSE TO BECOME A PARENT. ❤️ There is something we need to challenge in some Ghanaian and African families. The belief that the more money you spend raising your child, the more money that child owes you when they become successful. Some parents will tell you: “I suffered to raise you.” “I sold my properties to educate you.” “I sacrificed my happiness for your future.” “Now that you’re working, it’s time to pay me back.” Parents, your sacrifices deserve appreciation. But YOUR CHILD IS NOT A BANK ACCOUNT YOU HAVE BEEN DEPOSITING MONEY INTO FOR 25 YEARS. 1. CHILDREN ARE NOT BORN WITH FINANCIAL DEBTS TO THEIR PARENTS. Food, shelter, education, healthcare and protection are part of raising children. They should not become invoices presented to your children when they start earning. 2. YOUR CHILD’S FIRST SALARY IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY FAMILY PROPERTY. Imagine a young person who has just secured their first job. Before they can save for accommodation, transportation, professional development or their future, everybody is already calculating how much they should send home. How are they supposed to become financially independent? 3. DON’T MAKE YOUR CHILD FEEL GUILTY FOR BUILDING THEIR OWN LIFE. Your son wants to save towards a house. Your daughter wants to start a business. Your child wants to invest in further education. But every time they make progress, someone reminds them: “DON’T FORGET WHO MADE YOU WHO YOU ARE.” Appreciating your parents should not mean abandoning your own future. 4. STOP COMPARING HOW MUCH YOUR CHILDREN GIVE YOU. “Your brother sends me £300 every month.” “Your sister bought her mother a car.” “Look at what other people’s children are doing.” Parents, your children may have different incomes, responsibilities and financial circumstances. Don’t turn family love into a competition over who sends the most money. 5. LET YOUR CHILDREN SUPPORT YOU WITHOUT FEELING OWNED BY YOU. There is nothing wrong with adult children helping their parents. In fact, family members supporting one another can be one of the beautiful strengths of African family life. But support should be discussed honestly, with consideration for genuine needs and what each person can reasonably afford. And parents, remember that some families face real poverty, illness and limited retirement options. This conversation is not about abandoning vulnerable parents. IT IS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAMILY SUPPORT AND FINANCIAL ENTITLEMENT. Young people, appreciate your parents. Help where you reasonably can. But also learn to budget, save and build a sustainable future. Parents, if you raise a child who becomes independent, responsible, kind and capable of building a meaningful life, you have achieved something valuable. YOUR CHILD’S SUCCESS IS NOT A DEBT COLLECTION OPPORTUNITY. IT IS A LIFE YOU HELPED PREPARE THEM TO LIVE. ❤️ RAISE CHILDREN TO STAND ON THEIR OWN FEET, NOT TO SPEND THEIR LIVES FINANCIALLY CARRYING YOU ON THEIR BACKS. #MindShift360 #FamilyTalks #AfricanParents #GhanaianFamilies #AfricanFamilies
