Ancient Rome – The Heart of the Ancient World For centuries, Rome was the most powerful city in the ancient world. It was the center of Roman political, religious, and social life. Gods & Religion Temples dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Mars, Venus, and many other gods filled the city. Religious ceremonies and festivals were deeply connected to everyday Roman life. Daily Life Rome was a city of enormous contrasts. Wealthy citizens lived in luxurious domus, while millions of ordinary people lived in crowded insulae. Streets were filled with merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, slaves, politicians, and travelers. Monuments & Entertainment The Colosseum, enormous baths, temples, aqueducts, and monumental forums demonstrated Rome's extraordinary wealth and engineering. Legacy Although the Western Roman Empire fell in the 5th century AD, Rome's influence survived through its law, architecture, engineering, language, and culture. Rome was more than a city.
