My question is, why are they billing the insurance a huge amount but self pay is 10% of that cost. If they billed the insurance the amount they billed for self pay, insurance premiums could go down.

People with insurance pay more than people with no insurance and as a doctor, I get paid less when they have insurance. And insurances will put limits on what you can use a year. Like wtf happened here. There should just be the provider and the patient involved. Why is there this scummy middleman

Yeah. Got rid of insurance for our whole family after my last pregnancy. Now we self pay everything. Is it pricey still? Yes, but only at that time. Otherwise we were paying 2,400 for 6 people MONTHLY and not using it. Never reaching the deductible and always paying a high copay.

She is probably talking about the entire charge which is going to have a massive contractual adjustment. They could bill $10,000 but if their contract allowable says $500 then the $9500 is adjusted, they pay their share and you are responsible for the rest. Not defending this archaic system by any means but most radiology services usually just have a copay or coinsurance. It's best to look at your benefits for radiology because that $150 doesn't mean a whole lot, especially if the allowable ends up being like $200-400. That would then mean you would owe the difference. I would ask what the insurance allowable is going to be. Best of luck! This system is a joke.

#1 reason for personal bankruptcy in the US is medical debt. Cancer care or a NICU baby is easily $100k/mo. All it takes is one drunk driver and any amount of savings you have is gone. Our government doesn't reign in the for-profit insurance companies and it's detrimental to individuals. I support Medicare for all: have the US Government do the bill pay insurance function with out taking profit.

They’ve overplayed their hand. I’m in grad school so went to medicaid off private insurance and it’s so much better. We should have Medicaid/medicare for all.
