108 days. Over 400 miles. 155,520 minutes. Five phone calls. Countless letters. And a lifetime of prayers. 🥹🇺🇸❤️ For 18 years, I had never gone more than 72 hours without speaking to my firstborn. Until the United States Army called him to become something greater. I gave birth to Andre while I was still in the 11th grade. A little girl who had to learn how to be somebody’s mother before I had even finished being somebody’s child. Being a young, single mother meant sacrificing pieces of my youth I would never get back. Growing up before I was ready. Putting away childish things. Learning to survive while teaching someone else how to live. I didn’t always have the answers, but I always knew he was worth every sacrifice. For as long as I can remember, it’s been me, Jesus, and the help of my parents. And somehow, God made a way. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. On September 30th, I stood on that field with four children who have NEVER known a world without their big brother. Hailey, Terrell, Aaryn, and Owen. Their first friend. Their protector. Their Andre. ❤️ I remember my palms sweating, my heart racing, and desperately searching a field full of soldiers for the one face I’d been missing for months. AND WHEN WE SAW HIM, WE RAN. 😭 Because before he ever belonged to the United States Army, HE WAS OURS. That was MY BABY standing in that uniform. The little boy who made me a mother. The little boy I grew up alongside. And now, standing before me as a MAN. Andre, you have exceeded my wildest dreams. I used to worry that everything I couldn’t give you would outweigh everything I tried to give you. But standing on that field, I realized God had been doing something beautiful with every sacrifice. I thought I was raising you, but in so many ways, you were raising me too. 18 years ago, I held you for the first time, unsure of what our future would look like. Today, I held you again, knowing every single sacrifice was worth it. I gave the world a little boy. And God gave me back a SOLDIER. 🇺🇸😭 Congratulations, Private Brown. Your mama loves you beyond this lifetime. WE DON’T MISS. WE SHOW UP. WE ALWAYS WILL. ❤️ #tapout #military #army #basictraining #family
